Broken leg

I have been informed that a colleague who broke her leg in four places four weeks ago wishes to return to work on a part-time basis. She is wearing a cast and has to sit with her leg up, and sticking out. Could you outline the legal position with regards to this situation, as your advice will help in the forthcoming meeting with senior management?
