Mental health biggest factor for IB claimants

News | HSW
01.03.2007

More than one million people claiming Incapacity Benefit in 2006 said they were unable to work because of problems with mental health problems, an increase of 50% on 1997. The figures were supplied to the Conservatives in a parliamentary answer and reveal that the number of claimants with stress disorders has tripled since 1997 to stand at 49 000 and the number suffering from alcohol or drug-related problems has nearly doubled to 137 000.
