Kitchen asssistant wins compensation

Prosecutions and Claims |
01.02.2007

A kitchen assistant has won £60,000 in compensation after a judge accepted she had been injured after being given a fright by a malfunctioning coffee machine. Helen Given said the machine had emitted loud hisses and jets of steam before an electrical flash made her jump away. She fell and factured her hip and wrist. Concluding that truth is often stranger than fiction, the judge accepted Given's account and held her employer responsible for the accident. The machine, which was in the canteen at James Watt College in Greenock, had a history of breaking down.
