Electrocution fine
Prosecutions and Claims |
01.12.2006
Francis Michael Lyons and his company Lyons Landfill were each fined £80,000 plus costs totalling £70,000 on 7 November following the death of a self-employed lorry driver at a combined quarry and landfill site in Harlow in 2003. Nathaniel Hugh Scollan was electrocuted when the grab of the crane mounted on his lorry touched overhead power lines. The site was badly laid out with stockpiles near the overhead lines, inadequate signs, poorly designed crossing points and inadequate measures taken to keep plant clear of the lines. Lyons and the company had pleaded not guilty to charges under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
