Hairdresser fined for nine fire offences

Prosecutions and Claims |
19.06.2008

A London hairdressers that lacked emergency lighting, a fire alarm and a smoke detection system has been fined £4000 under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

Thames magistrates said The Cutting Room and Beauty Basement on Middlesex Street, London E1, had a history of non-compliance and that the lack of fire precautions could have led to a death had a fire broken out.

London Fire Brigade inspected the premises in March 2007 and found a number of breaches. They gave the company's owner, Mustafa Ismail, four months to make improvements, but when they returned in July they found that no works had been carried out.

On 11 June, Ismail admitted nine breaches of the Fire Safety Order. As well as the fine, he was ordered to pay £4000 costs.
