Offshore firm brached PUWER

Prosecutions and Claims |
01.02.2007

The lawlords have ruled an offshore services company breached the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) by providing employees with removable suspended ladders to access bunk beds in their sleeping quarters because the risk of injury if the ladders were not attached correctly was foreseeable. But they held the employee of Salamis (M&I) - part of the Maersk shipping group - contributorily negligent for falling off the ladder because he was aware they were moved frequently and should have checked it was attached before climbing out of his bunk.
