Trant scoops top award

Trant Construction has won the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' (RoSPA's) top occupational health and safety award, the Sir George Earle Trophy.
RoSPA said the judges chose the Southampton-based firm because of its strong health and safety ethos, led by the board, which has been successful in preventing accidents and ill health while also ensuring the continued growth of the family-owned business.
The judging panel cited "hands-on" health and safety leadership by all of the firm's directors and senior managers; a practical approach to training; employee involvement in problem-solving; a willingness to learn from accidents; creative approaches to occupational health issues; and the induction, training and supervision of migrant workers.
The Sir George Earle Trophy was one of several awards, sponsored by NEBOSH, presented over three days of gala dinners and ceremonies that ran alongside Safety and Health Expo at the NEC in Birmingham on 13-15 May.
ScottishPower Fleet Business was presented with RoSPA's top award for managing occupational road risk.
The firm is responsible for supplying and maintaining 3400 vehicles for ScottishPower and companies formerly within the ScottishPower Group. While the number of vehicles has increased over the last five years, accident rates have fallen.
Judges praised the way the firm meets the challenges of a utility-based vehicle fleet where drivers have to drive both on- and off-road, often in poor conditions after storms and flooding.
