Fall death fine

Prosecutions and Claims |
01.11.2006

Michael McCarthy, director of painting and decorating company MJM, has been fined £16,000, plus more than £12,000 costs for safety breaches following the death of an employee.

In October 2004, Lucian Vuta was fatally injured when he fell 8m through a fragile rooflight during the redecoration of a warehouse in Buckinghamshire. His employer had failed to put in place sufficient fall-prevention measures, such as coverings and safety netting.

Milton Keynes magistrates fined McCarthy £12,000 under the Health and Safety at Work Act, £2,000 under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and £2000 under the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996.
