Injuries and days lost rise

News | HSW
12.08.2007

Injury rates and days lost to ill health rose in the electricity industry last year, according to new figures from the Energy Networks Association.

The rate of fatal and major injuries rose from 63 to 76 per 100,000 employees (though the rate fell among the sector's contractors) and the working days lost due to injury leapt from 8051 per 100,000 to 15,207. The incidence rate of stress rose from 3919 to 5178 per 100,000, but the figures for musculoskeletal disorders fell from 13,148 to 9198.

The industry's safety committee SAFELEC, made up of employer, union and HSE representatives, notes the figure for days lost is well above that of the baseline year of 2002, making its target of a 30% cut in days lost by 2010 harder to reach. The detailed figures are available at www.energynetworks.org/spring/she/pdfs/safelec/SAFELEC_6th.pdf
