5m safe working hours for St George

Property development firm St George Plc is celebrating following five million safe working hours across its London sites.

The company held an event recently to commemorate this milestone and guests included Government officials, officers and members from Local Authorities where St George is developing.

Stephen Williams, Chief Inspector of Construction at the HSE was also there to congratulate the significant achievement. "In reaching five million safe working hours, with over 20 months without a 'RIDOOR reportable' injury, St George plc has demonstrated that with leadership, commitment and effective health and safety standards it is possible to reach high levels of safety performance in the construction industry," he said.

"We are very proud to achieve this milestone in health and safety, but we know we cannot be complacent," commented St George's managing director, Tony Carey. "It only take one mistake to reset this record to zero."

He added that through its health and safety governance, the firm recognises it is on a journey and it may never arrive, but it will "continue to strive for excellence to give [the] workforce the protection they rightly deserve".

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) require employers to report certain injuries sustained at work to the HSE. If there is a major injury or an injury results in the employee to be unable to work for more than three consecutive days, this is deemed a 'RIDDOR' reportable injury.
