Hatfield fine

Prosecutions and Claims |
01.06.2006

The Court of Appeal has delayed judgment on Balfour Beatty's appeal against its £10 million fine for safety breaches following the Hatfield rail crash. Four people died and many others were injured in the crash in October 2000, which was caused by a broken rail. Balfour Beatty was responsible for track maintenance at the time of the accident. Lawyers acting for the company argued that the fine was excessive and did not take account of Balfour Beatty's guilty plea.
