I think whatever is done needs to be pragmatic because unfortunately our media now latches on to any politically correct training that is given, and we certainly have an issue with sex education where it would appear that it's failing ...

Following on from Roger Somerville's comment, I agree, but in addition to that I think the direction is very important because it could make matters worse if people get the wrong message or we don't get the emphasis right.

Don't you think this is an inevitable consequence of the litigation-happy attitudes to risk? That there is no longer any acceptable level of risk if you can sue someone for anything bad that happens to you - there's a lottery ...

Referring to the recent story of the 17 year old working at Waitrose, who got his arm caught in a cardboard bailing machine, at 17 you haven't got much confidence, he'll just get on with the job.

I absolutely agree. Going back to litigation, that perhaps is sometimes the driver, a lot of the insurance companies are unwilling to take forward contributory negligence and would rather settle out of court which leaves you with this problem in ...

In the olden days when I did City & Guilds, part of my curriculum included safety. It wasn't branded as being safety, it was a case of, if you're going to work on a construction site as a labourer, or a scaffolder, whatever it may be, you need to do this, this and this and be aware of X, Y and Z.
