Racking inspections

Racking inspections

Are racking inspections statutory (every 12 months) or do they come under PUWER at suitable intervals? This is for both pallet racking (static) and office documentation racking (eg roller systems that are eight feet high).

Re: Racking inspections

Regulation 13 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 covers falls or falling objects. The approved code of practice states that "racking should be of adequate strength and stability having regard to the loads placed on it and its vulnerability to damage".

The PUWER Regulations would also apply and HSG 76 offers some general information with regards to racking.

The main requirements are as follows:
? The racking should be inspected regularly and maintained when required.
? Racking must be selected for the weight it is intended to support and the nature of the load.
? Racking must be designed and constructed by a competent person and inspected for any defects.
? The safe working load should be conspicuously marked on it.
? A risk assessment must be conducted for the storage racking.
? The safe working load should be marked on the racking.
? The racking should be protected from any damage.

On a final note, the inspection should be undertaken at suitable intervals, subject to the risk assessment.
