Accident reporting shortfall

News | HSW
01.04.2007

Seven out of 10 notifiable accidents go unreported to the authorities, according to a small-scale study for the HSE. Researchers tracked patients treated at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and found the HSE was informed of only 30% of 224 reportable accidents under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR). The largest number of reportable accidents came from the construction industry, with sales assistants and unqualified nursing assistants also featuring prominently. Local and central government boasted the highest reporting rate and catering/repairs, distribution/hotels the lowest. The report is available at www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrpdf/rr528.pdf
