HSE reminds workers about asbestos legacy

The HSE is targeting tradespeople with the simple message: "You're more at risk than you think", as part of a new campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos.
The executive will highlight that more people die from asbestos-related disease each year than are killed on the roads.
Every week 20 tradespeople die as a result of past exposure to asbestos.
The HSE is working trade unions, trade associations and suppliers to promote the campaign and remind maintenance workers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and joiners that asbestos may be present in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000.
The campaign will run during and February and March and will include advertising in the national trade press. Regional activity will focus on the North West of England, with direct mail and advertising on radio and in local press.

I read the other day that mesothelioma is one of the most expensive click-throughs on Google - purely because US law firms are so keen to secure trade from the back of it. It's a gruesome tale, but it has the ring of truth about it. If that's the case, it won't be long until the claims adverts all over TV, just like some of the other workplace complaints. While part of me thinks that's a repulsive way of businesses cashing in on workplace accidents, we should all be grateful if it helps to raise the dangers of asbestos.
