Floor collapse fine

Prosecutions and Claims |
01.04.2006

A London construction firm has been fined £45,000 after the floor of a new building collapsed, burying a labourer beneath falling debris. The incident happened on 13 November 2004 during the construction of a leisure centre in Royston, Hertfordshire. Calum Redman was working underneath the decking supporting the newly poured concrete floor when it collapsed, covering him in cement and leaving him with fractured ribs and scratched corneas. Stevenage magistrates heard the collapse was the second on the site that day and there had been no safety review after the first incident. On 15 March, Pellikaan Construction pleaded guilty to charges under sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act of failing to ensure the safety of its own employees and others plus other charges and was fined a total of £45,000 plus costs.
