Lorry fall inquest

An inquest jury has returned a verdict of accidental death in the case of Kevin Smith, who fell from the gantry of a lorry he was unsheeting in a Devon quarry.

Smith fell 3.6m, rupturing his liver. His employer, haulier E&JW Glendinning, told the Torquay inquest the firm had since fitted all of its lorries with automated or ground-operated sheeting systems.

New research into falls from vehicles will be covered next month.
