Legal counsel drafting the regulations to ban smoking in public places in England from next year have been instructed to follow the legislation already in force in Scotland. Speaking at the recent RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Congress, Ian Willmore, public affairs manager of the anti-smoking campaign group ASH, said he had seen the instructions to counsel asking them to mirror the Scottish legislation wherever possible. The regulations will outlaw smoking in all workplaces and enclosed public places and are set to come into force next summer. Willmore said the most likely start date would be 31 May 2007.
